Chapter 12

Peggy put a comforting arm around Alison’s shoulders and said, “There, there. Calm yourself down, Alison. You’re going to ruin your lovely make-up if you keep crying like that. Take a deep breath and tell us what’s happened.”

Seb surprised me by producing a tissue from his pocket and handing it to Alison.

Alison took it and dabbed at her eyes. She explained, “Peggy, it’s the wedding favours. I know what you said to Auntie Christine yesterday about keeping them safe. And that’s what we did. Auntie Christine never let them out of her sight until they were placed safely on the tables in the function room. I was on the way to the ladies’ when I noticed someone in that room. It wasn’t a member of staff, and it was too early for any guests to be in there, so I had a closer look. Peggy, it was Fay Spencer! She shouldn’t be here. She was doing something to the wedding favours. I shouted at her. She dropped the wedding favour she was holding and bolted from the room. She shoved me out of the way as she did so. I banged into the door.”

Peggy tutted and shook her head. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”

Alison dabbed her leaking eyes again. “I’m fine. It was just the shock of seeing her here. Bryony doesn’t want her here, and neither do I. I’ve never liked that woman. She’s got an unhealthy obsession with Bryony.”

“Unhinged. That’s what she is,” Peggy advised. “Did you see what she was doing with the favours?”

Alison shook her head. “I didn’t.” Her eyes widened. “You don’t think she was doing anything to them, do you? You don’t think she’s crazy enough to poison them or anything ridiculous like that? She wouldn’t. Would she?”

Seb said, “I’ll have a look at them. Did you see which way Fay Spencer went?”

Alison shook her head again. “I didn’t. Peggy, what are we going to do about those favours? Should we get rid of them all? Bryony will be so upset if we do that.”

Peggy advised, “We took the precaution of making more of them. They’re in Seb’s car.”

Relief washed over Alison’s face. “You have? Oh, Peggy, thank you. Karis, thank you too. That is such a relief. I haven’t told Bryony about them or about seeing Fay. I don’t want to upset her. She’s in the honeymoon suite getting ready. Auntie Christine is with her.”

The image of Bryony and Christine in that room suddenly appeared in my head. With horror, I realised I hadn’t noticed a wedding ring on Bryony’s finger in my vision. It could have been there; I just hadn’t been looking for one. I wasn’t sure if the possible murder was going to happen before or after Bryony’s wedding service. It could be happening right now.

Peggy gave me a concerned look. “Karis, are you alright?”

I forced a brightness to my voice. “I thought I might call on Bryony and Christine and say hello. They’re in the honeymoon suite. Both of them.
